Welfare board propses to counsel for family disputes at police stations

The Chandigarh Social Welfare Board has mooted a proposal with the police to allow them to depute their counsellors at police stations where they could settle family disputes. While the board has six centres that are run by different NGOs in the city, their presence is relatively unknown.

The chairperson of the board and former Mayor, Kamlesh, met UT SSP Naunihal Singh to discuss the proposal. She asked the SSP to allow counsellors to be present at the police stations to ensure that family disputes are settled by talking to the people concerned.

"Most family disputes get settled after counselling. People do not know about the presence of the counselling centres. Everyone goes to the police for help. We can have counsellors at the police stations. Another option is that the centres that are already running be assigned certain areas. The police stations of those areas could get in touch with the counsellors if there are cases that require counselling of people," said Kamlesh.

One such centre is functioning at the women's cell of the police. The centres also provide career guidance. Kamlesh, who recently took over as chairperson of the board, said that the aim is to ensure that city residents become aware of the services that are provided by the board.

Kamlesh had earlier proposed that a counselling centre could be provided in every sector, village and colony. The proposal to link these with the police stations was mooted to ensure that people can be directed to the centres by the police in case there is a case that requires counselling. A proposal for a 24-hour helpline to provide information to the people is also on the cards.
