Corporators slammed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for lack of alternate plans in case of a possible water shortage owing to continuous dry spells in the catchment areas.

The water in the six lakes will not last more than a month. “We have sufficient stock of water to meet the city’s demands until July 20,but if it does not rain well in the next few days, the total water stock will fall drastically,” said R Bamble,BMC’s chief hydraulic engineer.

Corporators cutting across partly lines questioned the civic body on its lack of planning towards a possible water shortage situation in the city. “The catchment areas are not receiving adequate rainfall. Does BMC has a plan B in case there is water shortage? said Congress corporator and standing committee member Sameer Desai.

Rahul Shewale, standing committee chairman and Shiv Sena corporator, said,“In case of water shortage,we use borewells and ringwells. There is no such planning by the BMC this time. It is of utmost importance the officials come up with a alternate plan in case the rainfall is not adequate .”

Three of the six lakes supplying water to the city have received lesser rainfall this year so far compared with last year this time. Bhatsa, which is the biggest water source for the city, has received lesser rainfall compared with last year.
