The Government isn’t paying for the five-star hotel stay — “I have made private arrangements.” This was the defence trotted out by Minister of External Affairs S M Krishna after The Indian Express reported on September 8 that he was staying at the ITC Maurya and his deputy Shashi Tharoor was at the Taj Mahal Hotel while their party preached austerity.

What Krishna didn’t tell was that his Ministry repeatedly tried to get the government to pick up his tab. This is clearly established by MEA records accessed by The Indian Express.

n On May 29, the day that Tharoor took charge as Minister — Krishna had taken charge on May 24 — the MEA’s Joint Secretary (Establishment), Gauri Shankar Gupta, wrote to the Ministry of Urban Development (UD) that both Ministers were staying in private hotels as their officially allotted houses were not ready. The UD Ministry is the nodal ministry for arranging accommodation for Ministers and Members of Parliament.

n On June 17, MEA’s Gupta wrote again to the UD Ministry and referred to a note from Krishna’s office regarding his hotel stay. “I would appreciate if payment for the hotel accommodation for the Minister could be authorized till the accommodation allotted to him by the Ministry of Urban Development is ready for occupation,” Gupta wrote.

n On June 24, the UD Ministry wrote back saying that, as per rules, it had to first accommodate MPs in state guest houses and when these were exhausted, in ITDC hotels with only the room rent paid for. “Transit stay in private hotels is not admissible for settlement,” it clearly wrote.

The fragile arguments eyewashBy: Ramanathan A V | 25-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward IE has exposed the white lie of Shri S M krishna, who fits the jet flying class of elite clan- he was very popular with the Czars of software in the Silicon valley of India and their continued admiration for his style and futuristic views even though Advani may call him stale and boring! When the Hon'ble Minister confessed that his bills were arranged, he did not say he spent it from his pocket, what did he mean? How could anybody pay the hotel bill from one's own coffers? Ministers' think they are pride of the nation and Parliamentarians behave snobish when they destabilize the house, yet say that they are the safeguards of Indian democracy while the citizen who voted him drenches his thirst with water, which also may become elusive because of rampant corruption. The netas who declare Crores of Rupees as their worth on oath, how they earned it, is anybody'sguess. Pompus living and doing little- that seems to be the contribution of our Hon'ble ministers in their humble robs!
Prodigal Sons.By: George P. Joseph | 25-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward The vociferous prodigal sons of Congress family. They may be brought on the right ways by people in the next elections, if they recollect their flop-leadership.
Model for True JournalismBy: MS | 25-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Good job. Newspapers have to follow up an issue till the end and IE, alone, has done it, yet again. Those who doubted IE for 'personally' targetting Tharoor would have got answer by this time.
Whats wrong with indian express??By: dm | 25-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Many CEOs of many companies stay in 5 star and travel by business class. Many of them have private jets. Our ministers and senior politicians needs to be paid well if you want to attract real talented people (like shashi tharoor for eg). If you dont pay your ministers well then we might end up with ministers who just joined politics to earn money from corruption (because they have no other way to earn money). We should focus on thwo things 1) the ministers performance 2) whether they earn money by honest means. We shouldnt be expecting that they live like us since they are elected by us.
Krishna's hotel billsBy: v subramanian | 25-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward This is a facile argument. The sixth pay commission has substantially increased the pay of the govt servants. Has it reduced corruption in govt depts?
An MP salary is only 16,000 per monthBy: dm | 25-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward So why do all these people so eager to become MP (for 16,000 before tax ??). because they know they can earn money through other means. just increasing perks wont solve the problem. Fixing accountability and strict supervision (by media and superiors) is also required.
mr.By: desai | 25-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward this clearly shows the hypocracy of our politicians. the fact that there was an attempt to get a free stay at 5 star hotels at the cost of the tax payer is indeed shameful. both krishna
