What steps taken in Gita ban case: HC to govt

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked the Union government to state what steps it is taking to intervene in a Russian court’s ban on the Bhagwad Gita.

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked the Union government to state what steps it is taking to intervene in a Russian court’s ban on the Bhagwad Gita.

The court was hearing a PIL filed by activists Vijay Dave and Rasendu Nanavati, demanding that the government should make its stand clear on the ongoing case in Russia.

The petitioners contend that the government should have intervened earlier as the case has been pending since June. The petitioners have quoted newspaper articles, which report that a court in Tomsk in Russia is hearing an application seeking a ban on the Hindu holy text. They also submitted before the court that the issue has worldwide significance and will set a precedent in “less secular” countries.

Lawyer for the petitioners,M I Sethna, told the court that the hearing in the case in the Russian court has been posted for December 28. The court has asked the Union government to file its reply by January 9.
