Opinion Where Are The Stars?
Most producers in B town have a common grouse. They are unable to get A-list actors for their films.
Most producers in B town have a common grouse. They are unable to get A-list actors for their films. Considering that ours is an industry dominated by stars,it’s a cause of major heartburn when they are not available to producers.
As things currently stand in Bollywood, all top league stars do one project at a time. So by simple arithmetic, each top star can only do two projects in a year. Now,since all stars have also turned producers, their top priority is of course the home production. That leaves only one spot vacant which invariably is lapped up by either Dharma or Yash Raj Films (YRF) Productions. So where do the other producers go?
Let’s test the Dharma-YRF bit first. Here’s a checklist of all the actors employed by them for this current year. Abhishek Bachchan: Dostana 2 (Dharma),Imran Khan:I Hate Luv Storys (Dharma),Shahid Kapoor: Badmaash Company (YRF),Hrithik Roshan: Agneepath remake (Dharma),John Abraham: Dostana 2 (Dharma),Niel Nitin Mukesh: Lafange Parindey (YRF).
(Just a case in the same point: SRK’s only release this year was the Dharma produced My Name Is Khan and Ranbir Kapoor’s last release was YRF’s Rocket Singh- Salesman of the year. Saif Ali Khan also was last seen in Dharma’s Kurbaan.)
The two studios get top billing by the actresses too. See for yourself: Kajol: My Name Is Khan & Stepmom remake (Dharma),Kareena Kapoor: Stepmom remake (Dharma),Katrina Kaif: Dostana 2 (Dharma),Sonam Kapoor: I Hate Love Storys (Dharma),Deepika Padukone: Lafange Parindey (YRF),Anushka Sharma: Badmaash Company (YRF).
(And,by the way,Priyanka Chopra’s last release was YRF’s Pyaar Impossible.)
Talk about total domination, huh? If grabbing top talent of the industry is any criterion, then it seems control is neatly positioned between the two studios.
Now let’s tackle the home production grid. SRK’s next release Ra.1 is produced by his Red Chillies banner. Salman Khan’s Dabaang is produced by his brother,Arbaaz Khan. Aamir Khan’s next is his wife’s directorial debut,Dhobi Ghat which is produced by Aamir. Saif Ali Khan’s Agent Vinod is also self -produced. Hrithik Roshan’s Kites will be out in May. Akshay Kumar is busy with producing and acting duties in Tees Maar Khan and Khatta Meetha..
Get the picture?
No wonder the producers are worried. Although in a position to create new stars, they desist from doing so because tradition has proved that only well known faces ensure an opening at the box office. And so Mr Moneybags are sad.
