CEO murdered in Noida
by gnsetty on 2008-09-25 08:14:24.770336+05:30
Mr Titus is absolutely right.MNCs do not but most Indian businesses pay soft money to the Goondas to get around any problem. This is a sad day for India's business integration with the world in future.Fernandez must resign or sacked for his total lack of humanity for the dead CEO.Fernandez is behaving as if he is addressing the vote bank.Is this how India's Labour Cabinet Minister leads the workers when they are sacked even if they are not permanent, even if they destroy private property and even if they are not directly employed by the company ? For Fernandez courts don't exist in India for any dispute if workers are sacked. It is time PM sacks this clueless worshipper of the Dynasty.

Well said Diljeet Titus! We should have started that action long time and continued. By this time all the non-performing politicians would have posed problems for Yama and not to Indians.
CPI or AITUC

It was no surprise to see D. Raja on a talk show claiming that an apology was not required. It was his union that raised the anger of the workers. The CPI are the nose and tail of the same animal. Never mind which is which. Nothing justifies physical violence. In case Mr. Raja forgot, we do have laws.

This guy is a central minister?? God help India. I think if people are put in these positions due to their dog like loyalty to 'the family', then this is bound to happen.
Mr. Oscar Fernandes
by Thomas on 2008-09-25 00:00:24.015468+05:30
Mr. Fernandez should be ashamed of himself to talk like this. No workers/union have authority to kill anybody or destroy any property. Will CII ,a stooge of Government condemn the minister publicly? Do they have guts or only they are only court jesters in the court of Sonia and P.M.Sonia Mohan Singh?

Unfortunate and miserable but as our minister are not appointed by competence but being loyalist. Same happened when journalist interview Shivraj Patil and he says that he has full blessing of his party leader means Mrs. Sonia Gandhi. Therefore all our minister don’t need curriculum but just offer loyalty and God save our country from all these incompetent people.Rashmi

What the minister said is RIGHT, at least partially
by Jay on 2008-09-24 22:23:36.331798+05:30
How many common workers’ family have access to internet to post messages in such boards? It’s not so surprising that majority in this forum condemn the Congress minister but very few have the guts and ability to analyze what he said. He NEVER supported the killing, nor do I. But there is a reason why it happened and what industry captains should do to minimize such incidents. We all know how Indian businessmen and industrialists work, particularly in construction, manufacturing and other labor intensive sectors. Majority of them are corrupt to their cores but our system hardly punish them. And due to such people few reasonably Good people are also blamed. What practical ways a common citizen or worker has if s/he is cheated by an industrialist or a politician? Practically nothing. It’s not that surprising that so many extremist movements are going in almost entire country. It’s time to introspect and change ourselves than to gloss over the incident and fail to learn lessons.
Industrial and Labour violence is a shot in foot.

It is unacceptable to endorse violence at political level, as this will lead to anarchy and chaos in country.

Balancing Act
by Tabassum on 2008-09-24 22:08:07.035534+05:30
We need a 'Balancing Act' that would allow quick remedy of worker and industry dispute. Working class in India lives hand to mouth and jobs are not as plentiful as China, that change is easy. This causes enormous strain. Indian employers may suck enough blood gradually, and may get away due to well known local tactics and corruption, and still not fire their workers. On the other hand the industry may be victimised by corrupt labour unions whose sole job is to interrupt work flow and demand higher wages despite performing poorly. In any situation, killing is unacceptable, and it can not be endorsed at political level at any cost as it will lead to anarchy and chaos all across country. If this is not enough, our judicial system is primitive in performance, but high in spirits and idealism. What we need is a parallel judicial sytem for quick resolution of labour and industrial disputes; and if this can not be done, then this kind of instances may become routine with industrial progress.

Not so rosy future ahead

I worked in an Indian MNC some years back. I found that they do all sort of crimes and corruptions, cheat its own employees, and workers hardly have any way left to seek justice. Even top management is not spared. Only one person (it’s mainly a family owned business) or members of his family can do just anything. Today Transparency international ranked India 85th in global corruption. The level of corruption is growing and there is hardly any civilized way left to address any injustice or crime. So far I know, not a single industrialists or businessman ever been convicted for doing crimes like food adulteration, cheating workers etc. Corrupt industrialist never been punished in India, unlike USA or other civilized countries. Uncontrolled capitalism and “winners take it all” mentality among so-called successful people without giving due credit to its work force will eventually lead to total collapse of the society, as we witness in India.
Outrageous From Oscar
by Sunil Maingi on 2008-09-24 21:11:04.942108+05:30
The labour minister’s comment was outrageous and totally unacceptable. Why is the able parliamentarian justifying violence? Such comments show his true beliefs, which are contrary to the oath he took, to uphold the rule of law while performing his duties as a Minister. The time has come to invoke a law against such vile attempts of vote bank politics and appeasement measures. The minister is doing a huge disservice to the workers, if he justifies violence to resolve any dispute. If violence is encouraged, then industry will pack up, and these very workers will be unemployed. Will he then justify robbery and theft as a means of sustenance?

How can it be different?
by B. B. Goel on 2008-09-24 20:43:51.400348+05:30
Increase in GDP and par capita income can not gloss over the dangerous consequences of increasingly huge gap of wealth distribution and almost total failure of our civic society. General public, common workers have lost faith on the system. Due to age old practice by businessmen and industrialists to use intimidation, force and collusion with govt officials, police, criminals and politicians they cheat workers; give false, fabricated financial data while filing tax and deciding the salary and other benefits of common workers, deprive general public a safe, civic life. Many industrialists force its work force to work in dangerous conditions. Such practices are more prevalent in places like places in North India. Almost everyone is provoked to take laws in their own hands. None has any faith left on the whole system. Urban terrorism, extremist movements allover India, killing of CEO in Noida is just the tip of the huge iceberg. Army, police can not do it.
