In a democracy everyone has a right to get adequate legal support to represent his case appropriately in the court. A section of muslims believe its a frame-up by police and the only way to address such misgivings is to allow the law to take its course. However, the decision of JMU to provide legal support smacks of politics. By approving such an expense Arjun Singh has made it clear that he is an opportunistic politician who does not mind stooping down to any level.

The decision of Jamia Milia’s VC Mushirul Hasan is unfortunate as public funds would be used to defend someone booked for terrorism. There is no provision under the funding rules promulgated by the UGC under which a university/college can defend an employee or student booked for a criminal act. His claim, that the university being an autonomous body was well within its rights to take decisions on such matters, has to be be questioned. It is also shocking and painfult to note our HRD minister comes to his defence.

Somebody should ask Mushirul hasan to show records as to how many other students before now have been provided legal aid by him. I am sure before now some student or the other would have been accused of some criminal activity in all the years mushirul hasan has been the VC. Was legal aid provided to them? If not why not? and why now ? If I was physically present in India I would have asked for these records under Right to information act. Can someone please do it?Extremely stupid action on part of VC. Arjun singh of course is a politico so that in itself is a matter of shame. His actions are totally based on vote bank politics ,not worth discussing. But I am really surprised by the VC , I was under the impression that he is a sensible person.

The Government Funds to any institution must only be used for the purpose for which they are given, They cannot be diverted, at will of the administrators, for any purpose they feel compelled or coerced into using them, The argument of using funds from fees and other student welfare schemes advanced by the VC is fallacious. Certainly these funds are not collected by Jamia to defend the perceived enemies of the State.If the VC and the student body of Jamia feels so strongly in the matter they should institute a voluntary fund drive to defend the indefensible persons. It is the duty of the State to defend the under trials if they cannot raise funds themselves. No doubt this facility will be extended to the accused if they desire it at the appropriate time. Therefore the use of state and student funds foe the unintended purposes is a breach of financial irregularity and it is strange that a Cabinet Minister who ought to be better informed in such matter is endorsing the action of the VC

It is the state's responsibility to provide legal aid to each and every person standing in the box. If it turns out to be a terrorist, he or she does not need a special favour. The fact that Jamia Milia University has to do that speaks of the utter shambals that our legal system is in. It needs to be computerised first to the maximal extent, as otherwise this nation of 1 billion will be under the rubble of paperwork that no one can track efficiently. One way to eradicate the growing joblessness is to employ lawyers on a massive scale or contract them so that our judicial sytem can get on it's feet and perform well.

Getting legal aid is constitutional right - but providing one is government's job and not that of university's. Besides, if Hasan saheb has any information that is important to the case and in the interest of nation, he and university should be depose before court. JMI VC surely owes an explanation.
