A deputy head of chancery at the Consulate General of France in Bangalore was detained by the city police for questioning on Friday after his wife filed a complaint that the official had raped their three-year-old daughter.
The High Grounds police station has registered a case against Pascal Mazurier, 39, who has denied the charges. "We have registered a case on the basis of whatever the mother has alleged. We are investigating the allegations," Additional Commissioner of Police T Suneel Kumar confirmed.
Suja Jones Mazurier, 36, has also produced a medical report from Bangalore's Baptist Hospital suggesting an attempt to rape to support her complaint against her husband.
A press officer at the French consulate general refused to comment.
According to Suja, Mazurier "raped" their daughter on June 13. She says Mazurier was with the child inside a locked bedroom for several hours.
Suja, who is of Indian origin and married the French official 11 years ago while he was working in Kolkata, has also claimed she already suspected Mazurier. The couple have two other children, both of them boys.
The chairperson of the Karnataka Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Nina Nayak, said Suja had sought a medical report on her daughter on June 13 following the alleged incident. The report was received on Friday, after which they filed the police complaint.
Following the complaint, fresh tests have been conducted on the child. Experts at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences have also met the girl, said Nayak.
The commission said they had held a meeting with the head of the French chancery, Caumontat Vincent, seeking monetary support for Suja.
"The mother has said she has no financial security since she held a joint account with her husband and was receiving an allowance. The consulate officials have promised support," Nayak said.
