Wife, elder brother held for murder of 38-year-old man

The Titwala police claim to have cracked the murder of a 38-year-old Kalyan resident with the arrest of his wife and elder brother on Monday night. The accused were allegedly having an affair and decided to get rid of him and usurp his property. Police said they strangled the deceased, after which the brother chopped the body into pieces while the wife watched.

Police said parts of Mathar Mohamed Dhuru's body were found dead near the Shiv Mandir in Titwala on December 12. His body had been chopped into 11 pieces and stuffed in jute sacks.

"We made inquiries with police stations up to Dombivali, and found that a missing person's complaint for a 38-year-old man had been registered with the Bazarpeth police in Kalyan the same day that the body was found. We traced the wife and the brother of the missing man and they came to the police station on Sunday. What aroused our suspicion was that they identified the deceased as their relative even before we showed them the photograph of his face," said Rajendra Naik.

The police then questioned the wife, Alifiya Dhuru (30) and the brother Pervez Dhuru (52) separately. Both allegedly had different versions on when Mathar was last seen, as well as contradicting versions on their movements on that day. Police said while Mathar had gone missing on December 10, Alifiya and Pervez waited for two days before registering a missing person's complaint.

On intensive questioning, Alifiya allegedly broke down and confessed to having conspired with Pervez to kill Mathar. Pervez was confronted with the details of Alifiya's statement and he, too, allegedly confessed.

"Pervez and Alifiya were having an affair for the last two years. Mathar used to run a milk supply business in Kalyan, which was doing fairly well, and the couple had planned to usurp all his property after killing him. This was Alifiya's second marriage. She has a daughter from her previous marriage," Naik added.
