Wife reveals Satyajit Ray’s real life love story

Legendary film-maker late Satyajit Ray's real-life love story was nothing short of a typical Bollywood drama, revealed his wife Bijoya Roy, in her recently released autobiography Manik and I.

Talking about his mother's book, Sandip Ray stated, "She was planning to pen her memoirs for a long time and got down to doing it only after my father passed away. It is entirely hand-written by her."

In the book published by Penguin, she recalled how they dated for eight long years, married secretly as they were first cousins and she was older to him by a couple of years and then made a clever plan to convince the two families for the match. The duo got married at the house of Bijoya's sister on October 20, 1949. At a small reception which followed, the legendary theatre and film actor Prithviraj Kapoor and his wife came to bless the newly-weds.

Later without revealing that they are already married, Ray declared to his mother that he would not marry anyone but Bijoya. Reluctantly and after much persuasion, Ray's mother agreed and the couple got married once again, this time with Bengali rituals.

In the recently conducted Screen- C fore Survey, the late film-maker was adjudged the Best Director with nine votes. He was also scored highest for his films getting major attention in the west and his Pather Pancholi was ranked amongst the third best film in the survey.

Movie houses in Kerala towns stop screening

A section of movie house owners in Kerala on November 2 launched an indefinite strike by stopping screening to press their demand for hike in ticket fares.

Around 350 theatres, most of them in cities and towns affiliated to the Kerala Film Exhibitors' Federation (KFEF), remained closed as part of the strike, industry sources said. The Government, however, took a hard position holding it would be difficult to meet the exhibitors' demand as most of their grievances had already been conceded.
