  • On October 5, Major J S Suri would have turned 30. He had planned to celebrate his birthday with his wife, S Pallavi, by the picturesque Manasbal lake where his 13 Rashtriya Rifles unit is deployed. Pallavi arrived at the 13 RR regimental centre in Manasbal a few days ago.

On Wednesday, Major Suri was killed in a major encounter with militants in Bandipore in North Kashmir. Pallavi is in shock. They were married only last year.

“She seemed to have guessed last night that something was wrong... confusing reports about Maj. Suri were coming in from the encounter site,” said an Army officer who was part of the 45-hour operation to flush out the militants holed up on an island on Wular lake.

“She is in a state of shock. Officers and jawans of the unit are trying to console her. It was very difficult for senior officers to break the news to her that Maj. Suri had sacrificed his life for the nation.”

Pallavi will return with her husband’s body to his home city Hyderabad tomorrow.

Four Armymen — Maj. Suri and three jawans — were killed after security forces engaged two groups of militants in separate encounters over two days in Bandipore and Rafiabad.

Four militants were killed, including two top commanders — Abu Pasha of the Hizbul Mujahideen and Abu Moosa of the Laskhar-e-Toiba. Both were foreigners active in Bandipore for the last eight years. They were killed in the same encounter in which Maj. Suri died.

    ... contd.

A salute to the Indian soldierBy: Harsh | 29-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Maj. Suri and his men laid down their life fighting for the honour of our nation. He led his men right from the front. The courage and leadership that he displayed is exemplary by nature. He has done his family, unit, regimnet and nation proud. As said in the Gita "The death attained by a soldier on the battlefield is the highest and noblest." Why then are we fussing and cribbing for attention from media and politicians? Please rise above all this. For people like me and countless other patriots such things are meaningless. Maj Suri will always live in our thoughts and inspire us in every walk of life. I can't speak for everyone but every Indian here who has felt love for the land he walks on will be proud of the ideals for which Major Suri and his men stood for. They stood for all that was worthy, noble and honourable. We may or may not do something great in our lifetime but what Maj Suri and his men did in their lives will echo in eternity. Jai Hind!

In vainBy: BMP Rao | 27-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Dear Sir,Major Suri got a mention in the media because, nothing interesting happened in Bollywood (who are at the most entertainers and at worst traitors, murderers and what not). It is good, some terrerists also died in the encounter. Otherwise Major Suri's sacrifice would have gone in vain as our politicians would have spent tax payers' money to keep them in luxury prisons and they would either have escaped, or returned with honours - after some plane hyjacking - or would have died of oldage.
Jai HindBy: Ashish Batyal | 25-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward I salute all the army personnel and their families. God bless these noble souls. It is time we all sop blaming any politician, media, or anyone and do our little bit by maybe serving in the army for a little while or my suggestion is that army should be compulsory for every indian in any way so that people (who don't know and dont want to join) realized their importance especially politicians. I don't see any single politician's son or daughter serving in army, why so?? Jai hind
Died for others sakeBy: Akshay | 25-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Q is why major died ?because trying to avoid colateral damages ? hell with these damages kill all the terrorists hiding anywhere blast those houses even surrounding houses we have to pay price. either this way or other but fear created by this way will deter terrorist entering into our teritory next time.I feels extremely pain in hearing even single soldier had diedpeople like Suri dies in records for politicians for traitors but not from the heart of people(we) fighting with him all patriots(in anyway)Plz god give courage to major. suri's wife.
