The Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has decided to challenge the legality of a recent judgment handing down life imprisonment to Dr Binayak Sen. Terming the judgment as ridiculous and unacceptable,Justice (retired) Rajinder Sachar has said the PUCL will definitely challenge it. Asked if he apprehended a government ban on the PUCL for supporting Sen,who is also the organisations national vice-president,the former judge said he wasnt bothered about such a prospect. The PUCL in its memorandum to the President of India has requested to undo the severe damage done to the reputation of the judiciary through the Raipur courts flawed judgment. It has said that no charges had so far been corroborated by any of the witnesses or evidence, and the prosecution resorted to using fabricated documents and contradictory testimonials. Sen has spent two years in jail (May 2007 to May 2009) and was released on bail by the Supreme Court. Such low quality of justice, routinely delivered in our courts,is itself a threat to Indian democracy, said the memorandum signed by more than 50 prominent individuals, while demanding Sens immediate release.
