Leading NRI entrepreneur and Britain’s “Curry King” Sir Gulam K Noon said the collection of Mahatma Gandhi’s relics, which he handed over to President Pratibha Patil on Wednesday, is his third such “precious donation” to the country and that there may be several more.
Sir Noon said the current collection, which he purchased from an auction at Sotheby’s in July, included a set of letters written by Mahatma Gandhi on the subject of Hindu-Muslim amity as well as a piece of khadi spun by the Gandhi.
He however refrained from mentioning the amount paid for the collection. “The price is not something I will like to talk about. But yes, this is the third time I have been instrumental in sending a Gandhi collection back to India. If I hear of other such articles of Gandhiji with collectors, I will try and procure them also,” he assured.
“The khadi has great historic significance since it is signed by Gandhiji, Sarojini Naidu and Gandhiji’s secretary Pyarelal,” Sir Noon said.
While a decade ago, Sir Noon said, he had purchased the Gandhi collection along with another NRI Lord Bagri, this time he entered into a partnership with Nat Puri. Both were present at the Indian High Commission for the handing over ceremony of the relics to President Pratibha Patil.
