Window to the world

Girish Joshi,director of the play explains,“It’s not a region-specific script because the emotions portrayed are global — loneliness,generation gaps and interdependency.” Talking about his inspiration,he says the initiative to bring contemporary cross-cultural Marathi theatre to Pune was taken by Vidyasagar Mahajan,who encouraged him to go to Germany a few months ago. “There I watched various contemporary plays and videos. In the end,I picked this script for its uniqueness. The translation was done by Mahajan himself,which,after his tragic demise from cancer,was continued by his wife,Sunanda Mahajan,” he adds.

“The play is not only a mixture of two cultures,it is also intra-cultural i.e. it examines the differences between generations by portraying the relationship of the young grandson and his grandmother. This particular play makes a wonderful choice,” says Michael Flucht,director,Max Mueller Bhavan. “Coincidentally,it is also Max Mueller Bhavan’s 50th anniversary in India. To increase collaboration between the two countries,we are also introducing one Rs 60,00,000 worth anniversary grant programme for atleast 10 projects. We hope that this helps young artists come forward and showcase their talent,” he adds.

Veteran actor and co-ordinator of Khidkya,Mohan Agashe explains that the window signifies a portal to communicate with someone. “When the protagonist,played by Jyoti Subhash,is a young girl,she sees an old woman perpetually sitting at her window. Asking her mother the reason,she learns the window is the only way the old woman can communicate with anyone,as she is helpless and lonely. That very day,she takes an oath that she will never end up in the same way. The khidki here actually refers to Microsoft Windows,which is her window to the world,” he adds.
