A day after being remanded to judicial custody, managing director of Vedic Village R K Modi on Thursday complained of “chest pain” following which he was shifted to the hospital at the Dum Dum Central Jail. The doctors, however, have failed to diagnose his ailment even after conducting an ECG, which did not indicate anything amiss, said a senior jail official.
“The doctors in the jail have kept him in the observation ward. Apart from having a round-the-clock attendant, Modi will also get to stay separately, away from other convicts and undertrials staying in cells and wards. Unlike the cells, the jail’s hospital ward is clean and has separate toilets,” said a jail official.
According to the official, the “ailing” Modi has also been allowed food from home and mineral water from the jail canteen.
Abhijit Sarkar, counsel for Modi, said he did not know whether any ailment has been detected.
Meanwhile, police interrogated Amarnath Shroff, one of the city’s top real estate developers and partner of Modi. Shroff was called to Doltala police lines and grilled for hours by North 24-Parganas SP Rahul Srivastav.
Shroff-led Diamond Group and Modi-led Vedic Reality have joined hands with state-run WEBEL for Kolkata Links, the IT hub project in Rajarhat that is supposed to house IT giants like Infosys and Wipro. According to police, investigation is leading to land-grabbing cases in the much-hyped IT hub, apart from Vedic Village.
The police are, however, yet to arrest two of the prime accused, Gaffar Mollah and Azizul, who is the brother of Trinamool MLA Arabul Islam, for the violence in Rajarhat Vedic Village Spa and Resort on August 23. Raids are being conducted in different districts, including in North Bengal, to arrest them.
