In what could termed as an unique operation, the doctors at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) prevented a woman from losing her eyesight after a metal piece nearly 5-cm-long entered the upper portion of her jaw through her eyes.
On Sunday, Buri Pal, a resident of Baguihati entered into an altercation with some of her neighbours over collecting water when she was allegedly pushed and fell on the water tap, a portion of which got lodged into her eye. Pal started bleeding profusely and became unconscious. She was first taken to a neighbourhood hospital but was later shifted to CMCH.
“At first when we saw the piece of metal lodged within her eyes, we had assumed the worse. She was bleeding heavily and we had assumed that it would require a big surgery, which would include cutting the medial maxilectomy but fortunately we did not have to do it,” said A K Saha, one of the doctors who conducted the operation on Pal. “When we were operating, we realised we would be able to dislodge the object by pulling it out with forceps,” he added. But the doctors said what made this case unique was that in spite of the seriousness of the accident, Pal’s eyes remained unhurt and her eyesight was not lost.
Pal, who was released from the hospital on Wednesday, said that she never though of getting her vision back. “The accident was unexpected and all I remember was that I was in pain,” she said. Her husband works in a factory in Agarpara and is the sole earning member of the family.
