With Karat,no question of joining Third Front: Amar

After asserting that no secular alliance was possible post-polls without the help of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the Samajwadi Party on Monday sought to distance itself from the Third Front sponsored by the Left parties, citing its discomfiture with CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat.

“Had comrade Harkishan Singh Surjeet been the general secretary of CPI(M),I would have seen some hope in this possibility as he differentiated between personal and political differences. But with Karat at the helm,I see no such hope,” SP general secretary Amar Singh told reporters in response to queries on the possibility of the SP joining the Third Front if the BSP walked out of the alliance.

Singh said the CPI(M) leader refused to meet him recently after he sought an appointment with him for some “personal issue”. “Recently,I wanted to meet Karat on a very personal issue. He refused to meet me claiming I was with the Congress. One of his Politburo members told reporters that ‘Amar Singh wanted to meet, but we refused’,” he added.

“After spending four-and-a-half years with the Congress, the Left parties now oppose it. But today we have ideological similarities with the Congress. Even if we may not have an alliance on seats with it,ideological understanding is very much there with the Congress,” Singh said. He added,“Out of L K Advani,Mayawati and Manmohan Singh,we consider Manmohan Singh an ideal person” (as a Prime Minister).”
