Witnesses examined in Saji Mohan graft case, final verdict on NDPS case today

A local court on Tuesday examined two witnesses in the corruption case against IPS officer Saji Mohan, who was the Zone Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). Two witnesses were the investigating officer (IO) of the case and the complainant. The IPS officer was also booked in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which has been adjourned to December 12 for the final verdict.

It was alleged that the IPS officer had embezzled cash from the storehouse of the NCB headquarters. It was stated that he had taken Rs 13.81 lakh from the seizure room in-charge, Balwinder Kumar, to deposit it at the State Bank of India. However, Mohan had earlier denied taking any money. He had claimed that he being an IPS officer would not carry money to the bank to get it deposited.

But, the complainant said on Tuesday that when the IPS officer was arrested from Mumbai and investigations were conducted at the NCB headquarters in Chandigarh, a receipt was found from the storehouse stating that Mohan had received the said amount from Balwinder Kumar, which was never deposited in the bank, said Rabindra Pandit, counsel for the storehouse in-charge, Balwinder Kumar.

He also said that Investigating Officer Inspector Prem Chand was also examined, who said that at the time of arrest that the receipt and other documents were confiscated by the police. The documents also included his transfer certificates to Chandigarh.

Two other cases under the NDPS Act are also under trial against the IPS officer - one in Mumbai and other in Chandigarh. The arguments of the case in Chandigarh have been concluded and the final verdict will be given on Wednesday.
