Woman accuses DSP, inspector of molestation; HC issues notices

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued notices to the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and an Inspector with Mohali police for allegedly "molesting, physically assaulting and abusing" a woman in police custody.

Not only this, the two police officers have been issued notices by the High Court on an application moved by the counsel of the "victim" who have alleged that they (counsel) are being "harassed" for contesting the case of the said woman.

Notices have also been issued to the Punjab Director General of Police and Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police on a petition filed by one Yadwinder Singh, brother of Neena Sharma, the "victim".

The petitioner has approached the High Court seeking directions to the Mohali DGP to immediately suspend Mohali DSP Rajinder Singh Sohal and the Inspector who allegedly molested the woman and are harassing her counsel to withdraw the case filed in the High Court.

A proclaimed offender and accused of cheating in several cases, Neena was apprehended by the Mohali police in September. On the night of September 25, as alleged by Neena's brother, the DSP and Inspector came to police station Matour, Mohali, and "molested, assaulted and abused" her.

Yadwinder had approached the High Court a fortnight back and sought protection of his sister. Also, he had demanded that she be given medical help as she is a chronic patient of diabetes, hypertension and also suffering from other diseases.

Even the doctors recommended that she be injected insulin thrice a day. A week after the High Court issued notices, her counsel approached the High Court alleging "harassment".

Neena's counsel, advocates Shelly Sharma and Gurmeet Singh, alleged that they had started receiving calls that they (lawyers) would be implicated in false cases by the Mohali police for contesting her case.

The petitioners have contended that if the Mohali police is in possession of any "incriminating evidence" against them (lawyers), the police should produce it before the High Court before taking any action.
