The Borivali police have arrested a 26-year-old woman's husband and in-laws for allegedly harassing her because she gave birth to a girl.

The Borivali police said Urvi Dharoda and her husband had been called to the police station thrice for a counseling session in the past one year. After the last session a month ago, the couple had patched up and even distributed sweets in the police station. However, on October 17, Urvi approached the police and lodged a complaint.

According to police, Urvi, a resident of Babhai junction in Borivali (West), married Samir Dhamji Ramji (31) in 2009 and gave birth to a girl in 2010.

Urvi alleged that Ramji and her in-laws began harassing her after the delivery. She claimed that her mother-in-law had threatened to get Samir married to another woman if she could not give them a grandson.

Senior inspector Bhagwan Chate, however, said Urvi, in her statement to the police, said her in-laws had been harassing her and not giving back the gold jewellery she had got from her parents.

"Urvi has made no claims of being tortured because she gave birth to a girl. Based on her statement, we arrested her husband and in-laws on Sunday," said Chate.

Samir, his brother Jigar, mother Jayanti and father Dhamji were produced before a court on Wednesday and have been remanded in judicial custody.

Man suspects wife's character, sets her ablaze

Sakinaka Police arrested Andheri resident Irfan Khan (25) on Wednesday for allegedly setting wife Shamim (20) ablaze suspecting her character. He has been booked for attempt to murder.

Police said the couple had a dispute on Tuesday night, following which Irfan set Shamim on fire around 2 am on Wednesday. He soon realised his mistake and tried to douse the fire and was burnt himself.
