Woman attacks army jawan for molesting her in Assam

An army jawan was attacked by a young woman shopkeeper who alleged that he molested her on the pretext of purchasing undergarments from her shop.

An army jawan was attacked by a young woman shopkeeper who alleged that he molested her on the pretext of purchasing undergarments from her shop at Haflong in Assams North Cachar Hills district,official sources said in Guwahati on Thursday.

Rali Faihrien,who runs a garments shop at Haflong,said Lance Naik Gurvinder Singh of the armys 8th Battalion of the Sikh Regiment visited her shop yesterday and asked to show him some inner wear.

Singh,who was in army uniform,allegedly started making objectionable advances towards Faihrien when she was showing him a collection of undergarments.

Faihrien then pulled him out of the shop and threw stones at him in public with local people and other army personnel rescuing him,they said.

The woman later lodged a complaint with the police. The army has ordered an inquiry into the incident,the sources added.

Army had been deployed in trouble-torn North Cachar Hills district for counter-insurgency operations following large-scale violence by militant outfit Dima Halam Daoga (Jewel).
