A 28-year-old woman, Rupa Chowdhury, and her eight-month-old daughter died after they were allegedly set on fire by her in-laws at Shibpur in Howrah this afternoon.

The police have arrested Rupa’s mother-in-law, Asha. According to a senior police officer, Rupa died on the spot. Her daughter, Manisha, was rushed to SSKM Hospital with more than 80 per cent burn injuries. She too succumbed few hours later.

“We are yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder. Initial investigation revealed that family feud may have led to the crime. Rupa and her daughter were set on fire inside the kitchen allegedly by her husband, Dipak Chowdhury, and Asha,” said the officer.

Dipak fled after the incident. Asha was later arrested from a relative’s house.
