  • A 34-year-old mother, in a bid to end her and her daughter’s life, ended up killing herself. According to the Fatehgunj police, Sumitra Datta, a housewife, tried to kill her five-month-old daughter, Aarya, by feeding her rat poison. Later, she herself consumed large amounts of the poison and ended her life. She reportedly had troubles with her husband.

According to the investigating officer, Inspector J R Desai of Fatehgunj police station, the incident occurred on Tuesday at 8.30 pm at Mehsana Society in Nizampura where the couple used to stay with the husband’s parents. “Sumitra and her daughter were taken to the hospital after her husband, Arun Datta, found them unconscious on the bed after returning from work,” added Desai.

On Wednesday evening, after 19 hours in the ICU, Sumitra died, while her five-month-old daughter survived.

Desai said that although the reason to commit suicide is not known, Sumitra’s in-laws said that there was a tussle between couple. “She used to keep unwell because of some disease. We are yet to know the medical history, as the postmortem report has not come yet,” added Desai.
