The Madras High Court on Monday directed a woman to pay Rs 50 lakh as damages towards the 'malicious prosecution' and defamation suffered by an actor.
Justice T Mathivanan gave the direction and passed an ex-parte order on a civil suit from actor Mansoor Ali Khan recently.
"On considering the submissions made on behalf of the plaintiff and on appreciation of the evidences, this court is convinced that the plaintiff has proved his claim," he said.
Sneha Sharma in her compliant had alleged she was raped on Dec 8, 2006 by the actor at a hotel in the city, where she had gone to attend an interview for the post of his secretary.
Khan was arrested later.
In 2011, a lower court sentenced him to seven years Rigorous Imprisonment and to pay a fine of Rs three lakh, which was later set aside by the High Court.
Khan in his suit said he came to know through court records that Sharma was already living with another person as his 'wife' and hence filed the present suit.
He contended that Sneha Sharma was liable to pay Rs 50 lakh for falsely instituting a complaint and that too with malice to lower his reputation and for wrongfully causing huge loss to him.
