UT Police registered a case filed by a Manimajra resident who was duped of Rs 1.13 lakh by a caller who had assured her that she had won an amount of Rs 25 lakh in a lottery.
According to the police, the victim, Vinish, who is working with a private firm, said that she received a call from a phone number 00923002809930 in May, 2012 offering her a lottery of Rs 25 lakh.
Station House Officer (SHO) of the Police Station, Manimajra, Inspector Yashpal said, "The woman received several phone calls from the said number. She was told that she has become lucky enough to have won the lottery - an amount of Rs 25 lakh."
"She believed the caller and agreed to accept the 'winning' amount. She was then asked by the caller that she had to deposit a small processing fee which will be charged for documentation purpose," he said.
Vinish made a transaction for a specific amount, Rs 1,13,150, in an account number of ICICI bank. However, after depositing the amount she did not get response from the caller and hence she approached the police.
The SHO added that the phone number has been traced to Pakistan and so it is difficult now to arrest the accused.
