The Borivali police have arrested a 24-year-old woman on Wednesday on charges of abetting the suicide of a student. The accused,Jyoti Pillai, allegedly blackmailed 17-year-old Ritesh Singh by threatening to file a rape case against him if he failed to return Rs 1,000 he had borrowed from her brother 15 days ago.

Police said Pillai was an employee of a private firm in Malad. Her brother Ganesh had taken Rs 1,000 from her salary and given it to Singh, who borrowed the money to buy medicines for his ailing grandmother.

On Monday, when Pillai found Rs 1,000 missing from her cupboard, she asked Ganesh about the money. He told her that Singh would return the money in some days.

Pillai then went to Singh’s house on Tuesday and demanded her money back. “When she reached his house,Singh was alone with his grandmother. She started abusing Singh. On seeing this, his grandmother returned Rs 280 to her,” senior inspector Bhagwan Chate said.

She then threatened Singh that she would file a rape case against him if he did not return the money, following which he hanged himself at his residence.
