Yadav was nabbed by passersby as he was trying to flee after gunning down Pooja, who was at the bus stop with her husband. He was later handed over to police.
During questioning, Yadav told police that he wanted to marry Pooja's friend Kiran, but the the former objected to the relationship.
According to police sources, Yadav met Pooja on Sunday afternoon and tried to convince her. The meeting ended with an argument. "Pooja reportedly slapped Yadav and hurled stones at him," a police source said.
Yadav told the police that he was depressed because of Pooja's objections.
"Yadav said he had planned to kill Pooja earlier as well and had bought a country-made pistol from Bihar," a source said.
Police said Yadav carried this pistol with him when he went to find Pooja at Sarai Kale Khan bus stop.
"He saw Pooja with her husband. The husband asked Yadav to go away and hurled abuses at him. This angered Yadav further," police said.
As Pooja and her husband were walking to the tea stall, Yadav blocked their way and during a scuffle, shot Pooja.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Ajay Chaudhari said: "The woman was not molested. Yadav and Pooja knew each other for the past few years. The two had a quarrel a day before the shooting. On Sunday, they again had a fight. In the evening, Yadav shot Pooja in a fit of rage."
Chaudhari said the country-made pistol and seven live cartridges have been recovered from Yadav.
