An Andhra Pradesh truck cleaner has accused a woman transport officer and her colleagues in Uttar Pradesh of beating the vehicle’s driver to death, allegedly after he stood up to her extortion demands.

The Agra district police have registered a case of murder against Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Sunita Verma and her subordinates, and begun investigations. Verma has denied being at the scene when the alleged incident took place.

The cleaner,Satya Narain, has told police that their truck (AT 5 W 1257) was flagged down by UP transport department staff at the Runakta checkpost in the Sikandra police station area of Agra district at around 3 am on Wednesday. The truck was on its way to Andhra from Delhi with foodgrains.

According to Narain, after driver T Ramarao produced all relevant documents,Verma — who was sitting in her vehicle by the side of the road — and her staff demanded Rs 4,000. When Ramarao refused, the officer and her staff assaulted him severely,Narain has alleged.

Agra deputy inspector-general (DIG) Asim Kumar Arun said police had found Ramarao dead in the truck. The autopsy had found an injury close to one of the eyes of the victim, and had put the death down to myocardial infarction, commonly known as heart attack,he said.

“We have collected the call details of the ARTO’s mobile phone to check her location at the time of the incident. We have sought the duty chart from the RTO office to check the names of the staff accompanying the officer that night, and to verify if they were supposed to be carrying out checks in that area. We are also looking at the challans issued by the ARTO immediately before and after the incident,” Arun said.

Agra Regional Transport Officer (RTO) V K Sonakiya told The Indian Express,”I have sent a report about the incident to the government. It contains the statement of ARTO (Enforcement) Sunita Verma. The government will take a decision in the matter.”
