Woman ready to forgive husband who threw their baby off bridge

Says husband is mentally unstable

If one baby that was stolen and reunited brought unmitigated joy to Aparna Pokharkar and her family, another mother is equally happy that her baby remained unscathed despite being thrown from a height of 40 feet.

In her moment of mirth, Shubhangi Deshmukh wants to forgive and forget. "I am delighted that my son is safe," says Shubhangi who hails from a village in Karad taluka. She says she actually has no choice. "We go around the village with a photo of god and seek alms. We earn Rs 200 per day. If my husband does not accompany me, how will I earn money?" she asks.

Though police said Datta Deshmukh was drunk when he threw the baby, Shubhangi said her husband suffered from mental illness.

"He never beats me, he never shouts at me or the baby. But whenever he sees commotion, he gets wild and behaves awkwardly," she says. The woman and the baby were discharged on Sunday.

Last Wednesday, Datta Deshmukh threw their seven-month-old son from the Indira Gandhi bridge in Pimpri. The baby landed on a green patch alongside the railway tracks, but remained unscathed.

CT scan, sonography and X-ray report showed no injuries, which many believe to be nothing but a mircale.

Deshmukh was beaten up badly before police arrested him.

Meanwhile, Aasma Kamble who had stolen a baby from YCMH and was arrested by the police has reportedly told the police that she did the act to please her in-laws who were pestering her for having a baby.

Aasma told the police that she has three children from her first marriage.

"After my second marriage a year back, my in-laws had been pestering me for a child. When I approached one of my friends, she told me to steal a child from YCMH as such things are normal," Aasma told the police.
