Woman who jumped off train to escape molester out of danger

The 30-year-old woman, who had suffered serious head injuries after she jumped off Brahmaputra Mail between Arrah and Karisat stations on Friday to escape her molester, is out of danger, doctors said on Saturday.

The woman had jumped off the train after a Jammu and Kashmir Rifles personnel allegedly tried to molest her outside the toilet in an AC three-tier compartment of the New Delhi-bound train. The mother of two was travelling alone to join her businessman husband in Delhi.

The crowd had beaten up the accused, Ramesh Kumar, before handing him over to the Arrah rail police. A friend accompanying him, identified as Dinesh Kumar, was arrested on Friday.

Three Railways Protection Force personnel, who were assigned patrolling duty in Brahmaputra Mail, were suspended for negligence in duty.

Meanwhile, a special police team from Darjeeling left for Patna accompanied with the father and a brother of the victim. The victim's father runs a small tailor shop in Darjeeling. "She is unemployed and was going to Delhi in search of a job. She did not have a confirmed ticket of the train," said a senior police officer of Darjeeling. "We have not received any complaint from the family of the victim or from the victim. We have to wait till our team reaches the hospital in Patna and speaks to the victim," added the official.

Films against gender violence

Kolkata: As a part of the One Billion Rising campaign, a film festival to protest against gender violence was inaugurated here on Friday. In the next three days, 32 short films from across the globe and mainly the SAARC countries will be screened at Rotary Sadan.
