Women councillors upset: Not even one of us there

With all three top posts in the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon being taken by men, women councillors are feeling left out.

With all three top posts in the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon being taken by men, women councillors are feeling left out. The MCG has 13 women councillors.

Rama Rani Rathi, who was up against Parminder Kataria for the post of Deputy Mayor, claimed that the Congress played “caste politics” to secure their vote bank. “When such a thing is being done, consideration of women takes a backseat. If women are treated as equals, why wasn’t a woman elected? Out of 13 women candidates,at least one should have had a top post,” she said.

Nisha Singh, councillor from Ward 30,said: “I would not call it being biased, but I must say that this is unfortunate especially when one-third of the councillors are women. This should not dampen the work spirits and now the time has come to really move ahead and work for the betterment of the city.”

Speaking to Newsline,Congress MP Rao Inderjeet Singh said: “There is no question of being biased. However, the entire thing happened under unfortunate circumstances. We will keep an eye on the future and try to include more of them in the various committees, which will be constituted. It was not the party, but it was the votes which the women accumulated.”
