Won’t hike parking rates: East corpn

The Standing Committee of the East Municipal Corporation has decided against increasing parking rates or levying additional taxes like professional tax or betterment tax. The commissioner has, however, said the Delhi Finance Commission would grant funds to the civic body.

Another important decision was to establish one school per kilometre in its jurisdiction. The schools will be equipped with CCTV cameras and security personnel will guard the premises. The budget for the project has been kept at Rs 1 crore.

"We believe that all municipal schools should have CCTV cameras and every councillor has felt this for a long time. The committee will decide whether to put cameras on every school building," said Mehak Singh, Standing Committee chairperson, East corporation.

The civic agency has planned to open 11 primary schools. The committee has also decided to recruit retired military, paramilitary or women police personnel to help girl students learn self-defence.

"The need to secure the environment and build confidence among girl students in primary schools to face any adverse situation outside the school. Every school will have one woman in-charge of self-defence and security, recruited from CISF, police or Army," the chairperson said.

Apart from focussing on the safety and security of its students and teachers, the committee has increased the budget for improvement of urbanised villages.

The committee has also increased councillors' funds from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore.

Councillors will be able to use their funds for development works in unauthorised colonies. The budget allocation for urinals for women has been increased from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 1 crore.

East corporation has planned to establish a dairy colony, for which Rs 1.2 crore has been allocated.

"We have promised people that no taxes or financial burden will be imposed on them and we will not increase parking rates. People are bearing the brunt of inflation under the Congress rule. We will spend more on lighting the streets," Singh said.
