The latest round of the India-Bangladesh Border Coordination talks began on a positive note with Bangladesh assuring that it would not allow the country to be used by individuals or groups inimical to India. Giving the assurance, head of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed, however, sought “timely” exchange of information on criminal activities near the border so that suitable action could be taken.

Like in the earlier meetings, the Border Security Force (BSF) again raised the issue of terrorists operating from Bangladesh. Harkat-ul-Jehadi-Islami (HuJI), Bangladesh, is accused of involvement in most of the terror strikes over the past few years. India has also taken up cross-border smuggling of cattle, fake currency notes, weapons and narcotics, influx of Bangladeshi nationals and problems faced in fencing.

Bangladesh has promised to address Indian concerns, but stressed on better sharing of information so that the two countries can stay a step ahead of criminals.

BSF Director General A K Mitra, who is heading the Indian side at the five-day meet that began here on Tuesday, sought Bangladesh’s assistance to ensure that fencing puts an end to illegal trans-border movement. He is learnt to have referred to instances of BDR personnel obstructing border fencing work being taken up by India. The two countries have also had differences on development work near the border, with Bangladesh insisting that no such activity can be permitted within 150 yards of the border. There has been some progress on this front of late, with Bangladesh agreeing to let India execute some projects in this zone.

    ... contd.
