The Orissa Government on Thursday assured the Supreme Court that it would not allow VHP leader Praveen Togadia to take our any rally or yatra in the state carrying the ashes of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati.
At the same time, the state Government also sought four more battalions of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) from the Union Home Ministry to stop sadhus trying to enter Orissa's riot-effected areas from other states. This request was accepted by the counsel for the Central Government.
In line with Wednesday's order of the apex court, the Orissa Chief Secretary also filed an affidavit giving details about the steps taken to protect the lives and property of the people of the riot-hit areas. The state Government said a prohibitory order under Section-144 was clamped in the violence-hit areas.
The state claimed that it took all possible steps to control violence and destruction of property immediately after the outbreak of riots.
Following its assurance that Tagodia would not be allowed to disturb peace in the state, a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan directed the state Government to ensure that no untoward incident takes place in the riot-hit Kandhamal district. It later posted the matter to September 11 for further hearing.
The Bench was hearing the PIL filed by Cuttack archbishop Raphael Cheenath, seeking a CBI probe into the recent incidents of violence in Orissa.On Wednesday, it had directed the Orissa Government to submit a report relating to steps taken to protect lives of people in riot-hit Kandhamal district.
