Hollywood has given rise to the term Bollywood, since the Hindi film industry is Bombay based. In Hollywood, they give out Oscars for best acting, best direction and so forth. But in Bollywood, they don’t give out Boscars. Since Bombay is now Mumbai, why has it not become Mollywood? Boscars would then be Moscars, except that Boscars don’t exist in the first place. Bollywood is not the only clone. In Calcutta, where movies are made in the Tollygunge area, it’s called Tollywood. But using the ‘C’ in Calcutta, they should have called it Collywood, for that would have left the ‘T’ for the Telugu film industry in Hyderabad. After all, these Hyderabad based films cannot christen themselves ‘H’ollywood. That would have been a bit too obvious.
The Tamil filmwallas got into the act and pilfered Tollywood. (Bengalis in Tollygunge please note). Being in Chennai, they should have opted for Chollywood and give out Choskars. Malayalam films are aplenty, too, so they can be Mollywood. They can’t take the ‘T’ from Trivandrum because Tollywood is already in Chollywood. We are still left with the Punjabis (go ahead Pollywood, bestow Poscars), and Shotgun Sinha’s Bihar, making Bhojpuri films. Can’t give them Bollywood, but they can opt for Bhollywood, and Bhoskars for the Biharis. The field is still open: films can be Jhollywood (prize: Jhoskar) in Jharkhand. Oh golly! Gujjus can have Gollywood. Pakistan has Lollywood in Lahore and Tulus in coastal Karnataka have Tuluwood. Dogri films in Jammu can be Jollywood. That would be a jolly option, no? Kollywood in Karnataka for Kannada movies was not taken because we in Bangalore call it Sandalwood.
