Work on to frame policy on converting leasehold land into freehold

The state government has started the process to frame a policy to convert leasehold land into freehold.

The state government has started the process to frame a policy to convert leasehold land into freehold. The objective is to provide land use rights to the owners. Revenue Minister Gulab Singh Thakur said this while presiding over a meeting of the Cabinet sub-committee formed by the government for the purpose.

The committee proposed a thorough study of the prevalent rules regarding conversion of leasehold into freehold in the neighbouring states such as Punjab,Haryana,Delhi and Uttarakhand, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. “Rules under the state’s policy will be framed after studying the process in other states,” said Thakur.

He directed officers of the departments of industries, housing and local self-government to come up with concrete proposals in the next meeting.

“The departments have been directed to identify commercial complexes and establishments coming up on government land in the rural areas so that leasehold in respect of these could be changed into freehold. This will not only provide relief to the users, but also add revenue to the state exchequer,” said the minister in a statement released on Thursday.

Other members of the sub-committee are Irrigation and Public Health Minister Ravinder Singh Ravi,Industries Minister Kishan Kapoor,Health Minister Rajeev Bindal and Transport Minister Mahender Singh.
