Attributing the rising food prices to drought, PM exuded confidence that worst was over.

Attributing the rising food prices to specific reasons like drought, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh exuded confidence that worst was over and situation would improve with the ensuing winter crop.

"Till now it seems the worst (on the price front) is indeed over," he said while replying to questions on the impact of drought on the prices of essential goods at a press conference.

"Prices of some items have gone up due to specific reasons like drought. I am hopeful that we would have normal rabi (winter) crop ... and if it is normal it would surely have its impact on the situation," Singh said.

Although the overall inflation is below one per cent, the prices of essential goods, especially vegetables like potato and onion, have continued to rise relentlessly causing pain to common man.

Answering questions on the possibility of another farm debt waiver scheme, the Prime Minister said, "It will not be proper."

Gandhian Steps of noncooperationBy: George P. Joseph | 12-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Every Leader is assuring so many welfares and its feasibility irrespective of any politics. When such questions are asked the leaders naturally reply to it and afterwards they would be under self imposed exile till the next election to activate the platform. Elsewhere in India now a days people are assessing the gain they got otherwise they don;t want to vote for any party. Such Gandhian Steps of noncooperation will fetch effective results.
Improvement in price situationBy: MOHAN DADDIKAR | 12-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward This optimistic statement by the PM is probably based on the capactiy of some members of his cabinet to bear daily expense of thousands of rupees to stay in fve-star hotels in Delhi for months together.
Yeah Right!By: girija | 12-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Is he in information and broadcasting ministry to give us various types of news updates or does he actually DO anything about any of these things? Be it Naxals, prices, corporate governance, education system mess, terrorism, pakistan .... the list goes on and on where our dear PM comes and makes a nice news broadcast and goes away with his job well done!
RecessionBy: KV Suryanarayanan | 11-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward It is true that the worst is over for the Indian economy, according to the Prime Minister. However, when people were just coming to grip after a serious recession, they are again affected by price rise of all essential items, including foodgrains, vegetables, etc. The impact is very severe in Tamil Nadu, particularly Coimbatore, which receives large quanity of foodgrains and vegetables from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The Prime Minister should personally look into this issue and do something to bring down the prices in Coimbatore, so that the absence of recession and slow down could be enjoyed and felt by people living in Coimbatore also.
