WR, AI, DY Patil, Canara Bank enter knock out stage

Western Railway maintained their cent percent win record in the league phase, defeating Indian Oil by 16 runs in their final Group 'D' league match to make the quarter-finals of the 9th Dr DY Patil T20 Cup at the D Y Patil University ground, Nerul on Tuesday. Also making the knock out stage were Air India, who defeated qualifiers Central Railway by three wickets and four balls to spare.

Put into bat, Western were once again given a flying start by skipper Asad Pathan, who smashed 58 runs (his second 50 of the tournament) in 26 balls laced with seven boundaries and four sixes. He was supported by south paw Rohan Bhosale, who scored 38 with three sixes to help his team finish at 174 for 4.

Two wickets in his opening spell by medium pacer Anureet Singh, including a wicket of his first ball curbed Indian Oil's reply and except for Harpreet Singh Bhatia (22) and south paw Abbas Ali (65), none of the other batsmen made a significant contribution and could only manage 158 for 8 in their 20 overs. Singh (4 for 20) and Sonu Batham (3 for 34) did the damage for Western.

In another match at the Dr D Y Patil Stadium, Central Railway was restricted to 140 for 7 by Air India, whose batting stabilised after initial hiccups and they then got the winning runs with three wickets to spare.

In afternoon matches, hosts Dr D Y Patil topped Group 'A' to make the quarters, along with Canara Bank. In their final league match, the D Y Patil spin duo of Pravin Tambe (3-13) and Iqbal Abdullah (3-24) bagged six wickets among themselves to bowl out State Bank of Hyderabad for 112, who were chasing 151 runs for a win.
