Wrong answer
* Following the gang rape of a Dalit girl in Jind, khap panchayats in Haryana have come up with their own solution to the rising number of rape cases in the state (Khaps say marry them young,Cong sees conspiracy,IE,October 8). They recommend that boys and girls be married by the time they are 16. Rape is a serious crime and lowering the age at which people can be married is no solution. In fact, marrying when neither partner is mature could even add to the problem. Increasing awareness and other alternatives should be explored to curb this crime.

* THIS refers to Reigniting an old flame (IE,October 9). Any cricket fan worth his salt would have truly appreciated and enjoyed Sundays match, where the West Indies won the T20 world cup. In 1970s,the West Indies team had an aura around them, and other sides were terrified of them. But in the last three decades, their fortunes dipped so much that they were compared with the minnows. This recent win has brought back old memories. It has also raised a hopes of a West Indian revival. We all hope that this win does not end up being just a flash in the pan,and that this winning streak is extended to Test matches and ODIs as well.

* APROPOS Rlys form tariff authority to decide fares (IE,October 9),Mamata Banerjee managed to push the railways off track during her tenure at the ministry. Current Railway Minister C.P. Joshis attempts to restore order are commendable. Former railway minister Dinesh Trivedi had initiated the process, but rationality seems to have no place in a politics driven by emotion. Banerjee had him removed from the ministry for trying to make changes. However, she is not the only one guilty of such politics. It has become a part of our political culture to squander public money in the name of inclusive growth, just to buy votes. But populist policies stand in the way of the peoples welfare in the long run.

* IT IS shocking that the police barracks in Bihar are segregated along caste lines (State vs caste,IE,October 9). One fears that such practices cannot exist without political support. In spite of knowing of the practice,Chief Minister Nitish Kumar did nothing to eliminate it except issuing an order in 2006. This tarnishes the image of the state and the ruling party. It requires a thorough investigation and those responsible for such a system must be punished.
