Gujarat: Year-long protest for displaced riot victims from today

An year-long protest demanding dignified rehabilitation for displaced riot victims will be launched from here on Thursday by an NGO headed by social activist Teesta Setalvad.

The protest will begin from Citizen's Nagar, Bombay Hotel area tomorrow, on the eleventh anniversary of the riots. Over 1,200 people, most of them belonging to minority

community, were killed and many of them rendered homeless during the riots.

A memorandum on the demands of the residents of Citizen's Nagar, Faisal Park and Ekta Nagar will be submitted to the state government, Setalvad said.

The state government had shown scant respect to the Millennium Development Goals for Gujaratis in general and particularly for the 2002 victims, said Setalvad, convenor of Citizens for Justice and Peace.

The CJP will assist displaced communities across the state to ensure regularisation of their lands and homes, provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities, and access to primary health and education, she said.
