Internet giant Yahoo today offered to be part of India’s plan to provide citizens with unique identity numbers, a project headed by IT czar Nandan Nilekani, but said it was not looking for commercial gains.

Yahoo’s worldwide Chief Executive Officer Carol Bartz today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and expressed interest to partner the government in the project.

“The UID project involves huge database. We at Yahoo have expertise in handling such huge amount of data. We met the PM today morning and discussed, among other things, how Yahoo can help the government in the project,” Bartz said.

However, the US-headquartered IT firm said it was not looking at making commercial gains from the project.

“There is no commercial interest involved in offering Yahoo’s services for the UID project... We have been in India for many years. It is time to pay back to the nation,” Yahoo India (R&D) VP and CEO Shovick Mukherjee said.

The project aims to provide a Unique Identification Number to the citizens, numbering over one billion.

Yahoo India has a major presence in India. The company claims that three out of four Indians access the Internet through Yahoo, which offers search engine, email and social networking services, among others. Yahoo processes about 500 billion emails every month, Bartz added.

Earlier, software giant Microsoft had offered to be a part of this ambitious project.

UUID projectBy: Prashant | 12-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward No foreign companies should be allowed to work on this project. Even the hardware if possible should be built within India, only those operating systems/softwares should be used of which Indian government has full access to the source code. debian/ubuntu/postgrsql/python/java should be the first choice. All the team from top to bottom should be of Indian citizens. No foreign citizens should be allowed to enter the premices.
Which Indian Company ?By: Shailesh Mishra | 12-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Its good to be nationalistic but at what cost ? Do you know any Indian technology firm which can complete with out using any US product ? The best we can think of is using some open source product which will give some pride and cost advantage. Y! offer seems reasonable as they are offering their technology without any cost. Y! mainly uses open source and is really master in those technologies. Surviving 14 years in Internet is a big big thing and Yahoo is stalwart in that. I will really love Y! getting on board. Govt will be benefited as Yahoo says it will not charge money for it.
Consider all options choose the best one !!By: Vishal | 12-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Yahoo's offer should be really welcomed as they provide advanced capabilities and expertise for managing this HUGE data. Their Hadoop cloud file system has been the backbone of some really large datasets. There Open-Auth security implementation is really really good. Even Google App engine uses Yahoo's Hadoop as the backend since it is open source and extensible. There are concerns regarding nationality of the implementers, but I am sure there are smart people on this project to work out proper governance models.
UID project and International IT vendorsBy: SK | 11-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward This is a National project involving personal data of every legal citizen of India. Such data only be accessed by only an Indian vendor duly scrutinized and security cleared by National Security Commission or the concerned authority. This is a project of National importance and should be handled accordingly.
