A murder accused lodged in Yerawada Central Prison died on Tuesday evening reportedly due to some "medical problems". Kushabhau Bajirao Ovhal (35) of Chande village in Mulshi, who had been lodged in the jail since March 2011, had been under treatment of doctors at Sassoon hospital ever since he complained of chest pain some time back.
According to reports, he had chest pain again on Tuesday evening and the jail staff took him to Sassoon hospital around 7.30 pm. He died there around 8.15 pm. Ovhal's family members claimed that his lawyer had filed an application before the court about his illness and demanded that the jail administration give him proper treatment.
Meanwhile, the Yerawada police registered it as an accidental death case. A post-mortem was conducted at Sassoon hospital. Assistant Police Inspector D B Shingade of Jail Road police chowki said: "Prima facie we suspect that he died due to medical problems. His viscera has been preserved for understanding the cause of his death." Police said Ovhal was arrested in connection with the murder of his uncle in March 2011 following a land dispute. A family member said the jail administration failed to give him proper treatment.
Yerawada jail superintendent Yogesh Desai, however, denied the charge. "He (Ovhal) had complained of chest pain earlier too and we had admitted him to Sassoon hospital then. His treatment was on as per the directions of Sassoon hospital doctors. After he had chest pain on Tuesday, we referred him to Sassoon hospital again. But he died. The post-mortem report would confirm the cause of death."
