The Yerawada Central Prison is on the list of destinations for convicted terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, who is still in Arthur Road Jail for security reasons.
Additional chief secretary (Home) Chandra Iyengar told Newsline on Saturday that Yerawada was definitely on the priority list, considering it is the biggest prison in the state. However, she said Kasab would get 60 days to appeal from the day he gets a certified copy of the judgment. Arthur Road jail is a place for undertrials and he will definitely be moved out. Yerawada is definitely one of the options.
The Yerawada jail already has 26 prisoners on the death row 24 men and two women. Jail superintendent SV Khatavkar said,From the Sessions Court to the High Court and then the Supreme Court, and also the request for clemency from the President, these prisoners are kept in our prison under tight security.
He said the jail would have to make special arrangements if it was directed to house Kasab. We would have to make separate arrangements for him here. However,we have not received any directives as of now… Kasab was allotted a special cell worth Rs 2 crore at Arthur Road jail, considering the security issues. He will have to be provided high security here also. Special structures will have to be constructed.
The Nagpur and Yerawada jails are the two prisons in the state with gallows.
