A murder convict attacked a man convicted in the 2010 Hinjewadi gang-rape case with a stone tile and climbed a tree before jumping on to the roof of a barrack Saturday morning. He refused to come down and had to be brought down by the fire brigade.
Police said the gang-rape convict sustained a head injury but was out of danger.
As per jail officials, the incident took place around 9.30am when convicts had queued up outside the bathroom. There was a scuffle between Sanjay Tarasingh Thakur (36), who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case, with Subhash Hiralal Bhosale (33), a cab driver with a criminal background, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in gang rape case.
Assistant police commissioner Prakash Gharge said, "After the two had a heated argument, Bhosale pushed Thakur, who retaliated by hitting him with a stone tile on the head. After this, he climbed a Peepal tree fearing attack by Bhosale. He then jumped on the roof of a barrack."
A jail official said, "The barrack is about 20 to 22 feet high. He started threatening that he would jump and was asking us to call his daughter and wife. We had to call in the fire brigade."
Fireman Navnath Waykar brought Thakur down. He said, "When we reached there, he started throwing roof tiles at us. We put up three ladders. The jail officials then called an inmate who is with Thakur much of the time. The jail officials and we told them that he will get seriously injured. We brought him down around noon."
Gharge said Bhosale's injury was serious but he was out of danger. He is under treatment at Sassoon General Hospital. "A case of attempt to murder will be registered against Thakur."
