Yes to lunch boxes, no to wheelchair

  • Security was heightened at the Kotla after the recent blasts in Jaipur, with Delhi Police doubling their personnel at the stadium, and deputing men at all parking points with special instructions to keep an eye out for unattended bicycles. But while those with VVIP tickets could be seen entering the stadium with packed lunch-boxes and pet bottles (the tickets issued strictly bar such items), Adam Gilchrist’s friend Perry Cross — who was interviewed on television in the mid-innings break — came up against the security officers’ inability to see logic. Perry, who suffers from paralysis, was refused permission to get his wheelchair in. Perry’s escort tried to explain that the wheelchair was a necessity given the his condition. It was some time before concerned GMR officials were alerted about the issue and things were sorted out. Perry was paralysed during a rugby game in 1994. He has founded the Perry Cross foundation to help others in similar position, is a regular visitor to international matches in Australia and was in India during the Champions Trophy in 2006 as well.
