The schoolchildren impressed former President A P J Abdul Kalam with their innovative ideas and inventions.

The schoolchildren impressed former President A P J Abdul Kalam with their innovative ideas and inventions. The Indian Institute of Management,Ahmedabad (IIM-A),on Friday became a hub for kids with innovative projects under IGNITE 2011.

It was indeed a problem-solving initiative undertook by three students from a government girls high school in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvarur district after they came up with an idea of ‘helmet control ignition system’.

The three students — S M Arthi,Vinotha S and Laila Banu — came up with the innovative helmet after one of their teachers met an road accident. According to the idea,if a rider wants to ride a bike,he will not be able to start it until and unless the four sensors installed in his helmet detect that the rider has locked the helmet properly.

The bike will have a circuit placed near the foot-rest in a bike and it is connected with the ignition system of the bike and the helmet with the help of a relay wire. The circuit also have a alarm that can alert the rider in case of theft.

“When we were kids we used to live with the problems. Today, our kids have challenging minds and they always come forward to solve the problems. This year 4,000 children participated in IGNITE 2011 from 15 states. We selected 32 students with the best innovative ideas,” said Executive Vice-President,National Innovation Foundation (NIF) and Professor,IIMA,Anil K Gupta.

Similarly,Manu Chopra from GD Goenka School in New Delhi innovated an ‘anti-molestation device for women’. Manu said,“We see lots of eve-teasing and molestation cases in New Delhi. My innovation will give time to a girl to run away after giving a electric shock to the person who tries to hold their hand.” Manu has invented a device that can give a 0.01 ampere shock to someone who tries to hold hand from the wrist.

Twin from Government Higher Secondary School in Anantnag District,Jammu and Kashmir — Refaz Ahmad Wani and Isfaq Ahmad Wani — had given 25 ideas and out that 15 got selected. One of their ideas is about a fold-able water bottle where the size of the bottle can be reduced.

Kalam conferred awards to 32 school children and motivated children by asking to find a uniqueness in themselves. In his speech Kalam informed kids to fight the hardest battle and never stop until they reach the destination. “To become a ‘unique’ person, first of all you should have a great aim in life. Secondly, you should continously acquire the knowledge, and you should do the hard work. Finally you should know the importance of perseverance,” said Kalam.

He further informed that the knowledge is equal to creativity plus righteouness plus courage. He advised students to take a trip to nearby village with their teachers on weekends and try to identify five people who don’t know how to read and write and try to make them literate.
