Gunshots were fired at Youth Akali leader Jaspinder Singh Lally of Mohali and his associate Rustam Singh,a sarpanch of Harlalpur village,on the Mohali-Kharar stretch of National Highway-21 near Desumajra on Wednesday evening.

While Lally and Rustam had a providential escape, two armed youths, who reportedly opened fire, were held by Lally’s associates and handed over to the police. Lally’s aides also blocked the busy highway near the ICC barrier in Balongi in protest.

The Akali leader told the police that he was on his way home from Kharar with Rustam, who was driving a Scorpio.

“At Mundi Kharar,a Ford Fiesta overtook us and after a short distance, someone from the car fired a shot,” said Lally, adding that he was saved because he was reclining on the passenger seat. Lally called up his friends in Mohali, who reached Balongi and laid siege on the highway.

When the said car reached the spot,it was intercepted and two youths were handed over to the police after being thrashed.

Kharar Station House Officer Sub-Inspector Harsimrat Singh Bal and Balongi police post incharge Sub-Inspector Anil Kumar rushed to the spot and pacified the frayed tempers after taking the youths in custody.

“We are lodging an FIR before initiating necessary action against the assailants, who have been identified as property dealers,” said Kumar.
