A youth in his early twenties drowned after he jumped into the sea near the Gateway of India in Colaba on Friday morning. Rescue efforts by the police, the Fire Brigade, naval divers and a navy helicopter proved futile.
The youth jumped into the water and it is suspected to be a case of suicide, said Colaba Police. The body was fished out at 2. 30 pm. .
Police said they received a call at 11.30 am informing them of the incident. "We had received a call about a man jumping into the sea near jetty number 2 and 3. A team was rushed to the spot. Our personnel could not get him out of the water because of strong currents. Fire brigade officials and naval divers were also called in."
The officer said a naval helicopter was also roped in to help in the rescue operation. "Everything proved futile and we pulled out his body only at 2.30 pm. He was taken to St George Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival," said the officer.
The police found a bag near the jetty with a mobile phone and some papers.
"We suspect that the bag belonged to the deceased. We have retrieved his SIM card and are trying to contact his family. Once its is done, we will know his identity," said senior police inspector Vinod Sawant of Colaba police station. An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered by the Colaba police, said Sawant.
