Police say he wanted to frame man who had lent him money

The man who called the Police Control Room warning of a threat to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s life was trying to frame a person to whom he owed some money, the Delhi Police claimed on Sunday. And he was successful to some extent, till the police cracked the plot and traced the accused,Beer Singh.

Singh,a resident of Satpoli in East Delhi’s Farsh Bazaar area, makes velvet boxes for a local jeweller. The 25-year-old had reportedly borrowed Rs 20,000 from Lal Singh, who he knew from his old house in Narela, and was not returning it,said the police. “Lal Singh used to call him up often. But Beer Singh had no money to pay back the debt and came up with the idea of framing Lal Singh,” said the police.

Singh’s idea was ingenious. He stole a Garuda phone,20473876,belonging to one Mahender Gupta and used it to call the PCR on Thursday and warn that the Chief Minister will be killed within 72 hours, said the police. Immediately after,he called on Lal Singh’s mobile phone and then switched off the phone.

As expected,Lal Singh became one of the main suspects. But after questioning him,the police concluded that he had nothing to do with the call. Checking the cellphone ID,the police traced the phone, from which the call was made,to the Farsh Bazaar area where Singh works on Thursday.

“Then Lal Singh told us that he had lent some money to Beer Singh. When we questioned Beer Singh,he confessed to the crime,” said a senior police officer.

Singh has been arrested under Sections 506 (criminal intimidation),509 (word, gesture or act to insult the modesty of woman) and 66 of the Information Technology Act. The accused hails from Madhya Pradesh and has three children. Sources said he had earlier made random calls on a few numbers in a woman’s voice.
