Congress leader Digvijay Singh today said religious fundamentalism is the biggest danger the country is facing and the language used by youths on social networking sites is promoting communalism.

"The very fact that an army officer has been arrested in terror cases (Malegaon blasts) is something very frightening. I have seen such religious fundamentals infiltrating into the system over the last few years...This I think, is the biggest challenge the country is facing today," he said.

The Congress leader said "the rise of religious fundamentalism in the name of nationalism is unfortunately coming into the mainstream of Indian politics".

He said there has been a growth in religious fundamentalism and this can be gauged by the language used by youths on social networking websites.

"In social networking sites, you see the kind of language that is being used by young people in promoting communalism," Singh said.

On Babri Masjid-Ramjanmabhoomi dispute, he said, "I think, it was a mistake on the part of the then Prime Minister (Narasimha Rao) to accept the affidavit submitted by Vishwa Hindu Parishad in the Supreme Court in the matter."

In July 1992, the Sangh Parivar had laid the foundation for the proposed Ram temple by digging around the Babri Masjid and filling the area with a layer of reinforced cement concrete. The UP government led by Kalyan Singh (who was in BJP that time) called it a "platform" for performing bhajans, while VHP declared it as the foundation for Ram temple.

Kar Seva was supposed to be conducted in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992 and Kalyan Singh filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court that as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, he will not allow any damage to the mosque. However, Kar Sevaks demolished Babri mosque on that day.

Singh said there were conflicts and differences on various issues within Congress also.
